The ideal process of designing a website is to follow brand guidelines in order to come up with something that works with the rest of the business, is consistent and resonates with everything that has been done in the past. Unfortunately, in many cases, clients don’t always provide brand guidelines because they don’t have a brand identity. Some do have a logo and colours they would like us to use – however, a logo and a colour palette alone do not make a brand identity.
The truth is, by designing a website, we are already building your brand identity which includes some of the following elements: a logo, brand colours, typography, graphic elements and a photography style.
In most cases the design process ends after the website has been approved and sent for development. Personally, I don’t think this is the right way of doing it – instead people should think of how to expand their branding further and apply their brand values to any visual elements that will promote the business.

Your brand identity is hugely important for the success of your business, and that’s why it shouldn’t stop after your website. Brand identity is important because it gives your business a personality, it makes it consistent, recognisable, loyal, and most important of all, different!
Whilst your website is a vital part of your brand identity and plays a very important role in shaping your business, it is not what makes your business a whole. If your company’s brand identity was a jigsaw puzzle – your website would just be a single piece.
